The choice of location for international businesses is made according to increasingly stringent criteria in a tough competitive climate; as well as seeking conditions that will stimulate growth, companies also looking for quality premises, especially from the environmental point of view.

Paris Region offers an array of existing and planned business parks, reinforcing its position as a leading, multi-faceted business hub and eco-region that is home to start-ups and businesses of every type, with regional authorities working closely with businesses and a services offer that fulfils their needs.

As part of this support structure, the Paris Region Economic Development Agency has created an index of the region’s “eco-qualified” business parks – i.e. those implementing an environmental or sustainable development policy. Initially, 31 projects either completed or underway are being presented on Econovista, and more will be added soon as more projects develop; those involved have found that this type of approach, once launched, soon gathers momentum.

Telehouse to set its 3d datacenter in France in the Yvelines (78)

Telehouse Europe, a subsidiary of Japanese corporation KDDI, a Global 300 company, has recently announced the opening of its third datacenter in France. Based in Saint-Quentin-en Yvelines, Magny-les-Hameaux, the site will be 15 000 square-meters and is planned to open beginning of 2009.
Telehouse acts as a major telecom hub and helps address customer requirements for heightened security, connectivity and business continuity.

La Défense has celebrated its 50 years old

30000 peoples were all together on September 9th to celebrate La Défense’s 50th anniversary. Music, laser effects, fireworks, have set ablaze the Grande Arche during 30 minutes.

Today, La Défense is just what those who initially conceived it wanted it to become: a business quarter, the prime business quarter in Europe and one of the most attractive in the world.

This economic grandeur is not only the fruit of legislation governing the market and the interest shared by investors. It is the result of a political will backed by the State and relayed by the instrument which it established as far back as 1958: the EPAD, the Public Body for the development of La Défense. Showcase for half a century of architecture, intersection point for all the public transport networks on the near edge of Paris, life-size laboratory for technological innovation applied to the workplace environment, this crucible of energies accumulates and continues to generate the trump cards of its own glowing reputation.

Hauts-de-Seine: sustainable business districts

EPAD – the public body for the development of La Défense – organised the first global summit of business districts for sustainable development. The summit brought together around 100 players from the business districts of 21 cities (Barcelona, Berlin, Brussels, Casablanca, Le Cap, London, Liverpool, Madrid, Montreal, Moscow, Beijing, Rabat, São Paulo, Shanghai, Seville, Shenzhen, Shenyang, Singapore, Vienna, etc.) along with researchers, universities, architects, urban planning experts and company managers. At the end of the summit EPAD proposed that participants should commit to a 10-point charter entitled The La Défense declaration for sustainable business districts, which was adopted by all participants. The commitments included reducing energy consumption and increasing the use of renewable energies, effective management of the water use cycle, air quality and materials use, reducing and recycling waste and developing a plan for sustainable transport.All participants expressed their common aim of creating an international network of business districts and cities all over the world in order to promote sustainable development.

Following these commitments to the environment, energy saving, improving living conditions and mixed usage in business districts, EPAD announced that it was launching a survey to assess the energy efficiency of La Défense. The new high-rise towers to be built by 2015 will be energy-efficient and designed to create a comfortable and secure environment for their users.

Seine-et-Marne: the development of Val d'Europe

Val d’Europe, pôle économique et urbain majeur de l’Est parisien

Val d’Europe, a major economic and urban hub to the east of Paris, currently has 22,000 residents, 21,000 jobs, and 1,000 students over an area of 2,000 hectares. 1,000 companies have already located to 100,000 m² of offices here, attracted by the dense network of infrastructures (TGV – high-speed rail; RER – high-speed metro): including the headquarters of BNP Paribas, KPMG and international companies such as Henkel Technologies France, ITT industries, Straumann, Welch Allyn, Sikla, etc.

Investment bank Natixis plans to open its IT Data Center here in late 2009. The hub’s expansion continues at a steady rate with the upcoming opening of the Faraday development by property developer Goodman, the arrival of new brands to strengthen the Val d’Europe retail centre, the roll-out of major public amenities (education and health), and the Disney Nature Village.

The Nature Village, the largest tourist project currently being planned in France, is based on the concept of the relationship between humans and nature. The project – which will meet the highest environmental standards – includes a hotel and leisure complex which can accommodate 20,000 to 25,000 people, over an area of 520 hectares. Work is scheduled to start in 2009 and the first phase of the project, comprising 2,300 houses, will be completed in 2010. The project as a whole will be completed in 2020.
The creation of a 30,000 m2 convention and exhibition centre, operational from 2012 onwards, will also consolidate Disneyland’s position as European leader in this sector.

The Secretary of State for the development of Paris Region is looking to launch “major structural projects” designed to re-shape the region.
He has mentioned two key projects in particular: the creation of a global science and technology hub around the Plateau de Saclay and the development of the Plaine de France area to the north-east of Paris.

The Plateau de Saclay, a vast hub of scientific innovation and research, hosts a university specialising in science (Orsay), prestigious “grandes écoles” (elite universities: the Polytechnique, HEC, Supélec, etc.) and many multidisciplinary and international research laboratories (CEA – the French atomic energy commission, CNRS – the French National Centre for Scientific Research, INRA – the scientific institute for agricultural research, etc.). This cluster of institutions is unrivalled anywhere else in France, generating synergies and technological innovations which make waves across Europe and the world. This is the only cluster in France comparable with the major global centres for training, research, development and innovation, and it’s also home to many high-tech companies.

Benefiting from its dense concentration of national and international amenities and infrastructures, Plaine de France is one of Europe’s major transit and business hubs. The growth of Roissy, the recent economic regeneration of the Plaine-Saint-Denis, and development projects focused around the airport platform of Le Bourget make Plaine de France one of the most dynamic zones in France and in the whole of Europe. The area also has nearly 50,000 university-level students, at the Paris 8 Paris 13 universities, CNAM (the National Conservatory of Arts and Crafts), SUPMECA (higher institute of mechanical and industrial engineering) and the Institut Galilée. The area’s youthful population, the availability of real estate, its amenities and research centres and its dense network of transport infrastructures, give it immense potential for economic development. The centre and north of the Plaine de France area offer huge undeveloped spaces which will come under pressure as Roissy’s economic development continues.
